{"id":2696,"date":"2026-06-23T19:01:47","date_gmt":"2026-06-23T19:01:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sksimracing.com\/?p=2696"},"modified":"2026-06-23T22:19:38","modified_gmt":"2026-06-23T22:19:38","slug":"20-hours-later-the-fanatec-podium-dd-keeps-getting-better","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sksimracing.com\/index.php\/2026\/06\/23\/20-hours-later-the-fanatec-podium-dd-keeps-getting-better\/","title":{"rendered":"20 Hours Later: The Fanatec Podium DD Keeps Getting Better"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few months ago, I published my first impressions of the Fanatec Podium DD after three NASCAR Next Gen league races and roughly four hours behind the wheel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the time, I was impressed by the wheelbase&#8217;s smoothness, fidelity, and ability to communicate subtle details from the racing surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, after approximately 20 hours of use, I can confidently say those early impressions were not a honeymoon phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If anything, the Podium DD continues to impress the more time I spend with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And this week&#8217;s NASCAR schedule provided the perfect test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-sonoma-separates-good-hardware-from-great-hardware\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sonoma Separates Good Hardware From Great Hardware<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This week, our NASCAR Next Gen league headed to Sonoma Raceway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For many oval racers, Sonoma can be one of the most challenging tracks on the calendar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike superspeedways or intermediate ovals, Sonoma demands precision. Every braking zone, every curb, every elevation change, and every corner exit matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That makes it a fantastic place to evaluate a direct drive coming back to is fidelity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many wheelbases are capable of producing strong force feedback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Far fewer are capable of delivering meaningful information without overwhelming the driver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Podium DD continues to strike that balance exceptionally well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Sonoma, I could clearly feel:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Changes in grip level throughout the lap<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Weight transfer during heavy braking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Front tire loading entering corners<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Subtle curb strikes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Surface transitions across the racing line<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Rear tire movement during corner exit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing felt exaggerated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing felt artificial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, the wheel communicated exactly what the car was doing while remaining remarkably smooth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-smoothness-matters-more-than-maximum-torque\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Smoothness Matters More Than Maximum Torque<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When sim racers discuss premium wheelbases, torque numbers often dominate the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But after spending significant time with the Podium DD, I believe smoothness may be its most underrated strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is never a feeling that the wheel is fighting itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no harshness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No unnecessary spikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just a constant flow of information coming through the steering wheel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That smoothness allows the finer details to stand out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of sorting through noise, you&#8217;re processing useful information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And when you&#8217;re trying to thread a NASCAR Next Gen car through Sonoma&#8217;s technical sections, that matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-building-confidence-every-lap\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Building Confidence Every Lap<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the biggest surprises over these first 20 hours is how much confidence the wheelbase inspires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As drivers, confidence often comes from predictability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The better you understand what the car is doing, the closer you can operate to the limit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Podium DD consistently provides that understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether it&#8217;s the front tires beginning to push, the rear tires starting to rotate, or the car loading up during braking, the information arrives early and clearly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s particularly valuable on a circuit like Sonoma where mistakes are punished quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 impressions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it&#8217;s still early in the overall testing process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the coming weeks I&#8217;ll continue evaluating the Podium DD across:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">NASCAR Next Gen oval racing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Additional road course events<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Long-run tire management scenarios<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Different wheel configurations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Comparisons against other Fanatec wheelbases<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Additional iRacing disciplines<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I also want to continue exploring a question many racers are asking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How much better is the Podium DD than the ClubSport DD+ in real-world racing situations?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer is becoming clearer every week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-final-thoughts-after-20-hours\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Thoughts After 20 Hours<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After roughly 20 hours behind the wheel, the Fanatec Podium DD continues to impress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its combination of smoothness, fidelity, detail, and consistency creates an experience that feels genuinely premium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sonoma Raceway has been one of the best tests yet, and the wheelbase handled everything the NASCAR Next Gen car could throw at it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More importantly, it continues to do what every great piece of sim racing hardware should do:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
